Use trivets and hot pads when setting hot pots and pans on the counter. Failing to do so can burn the stone and affect the shine.

Test if your granite needs resealing by sprinkling water on the surface, if it darkens or absorbs rather than beading up, it’s time to reseal. It is best to do this test in high use areas. White granites tend to be the most porous and will benefit from sealing more frequently.

Wipe up spills immediately. Even though most granites are less porous than other natural stones, liquids and oils can still seep into the stone and permanently discolor the stone even if it is sealed. 

Avoid using abrasive cleaners or scouring powders. Harsh, gritty cleaners can dull the polished finish of your granite and potentially scratch the surface. Stick to pH-neutral or stone-specific cleaning products instead.

Avoid scrubbing with abrasive pads or the rough side of sponges. The scratchy side of sponges, steel wool, or abrasive scrubbing pads can leave fine scratches on your granite’s surface. Always use soft cloths, microfiber towels, or the soft side of sponges.

Avoid placing hot pans, skillets, or trays directly on the countertop. While granite can withstand heat, sudden temperature changes or prolonged exposure to extreme heat can cause thermal shock or discoloration. Always use trivets, hot pads, or cooling racks.

Avoid using your granite as a cutting board. Cutting directly on granite will dull your knives quickly and can potentially scratch or chip the stone’s surface over time. Always use a proper cutting board to protect both your countertop and your blades.
